Kintsukuroi—pronounced as ‘keen-tsoo-koo-roy’

‘To repair with gold’; the art of repairing pottery with gold lacquer and understanding that the piece is more beautiful for having been broken.

Beautifully broken and perfectly imperfect, this illustration series titled Kintskuroi is a sequence of 20 hand made drawings. A mixture of black ink pens and gold paint is used to draw intricate line work and zentangle art styles. Broken pottery pieces sourced from rubbish tips and the local community are used to evoke the original practice, incorporated into animal illustrations that are repaired with gold. This project aims to reinvent the purpose and value of an object that has been discarded to produce something magical.
